The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control has refuted rumours alleging the presence of bovine tuberculosis in beef sold by Northerners.

In a statement signed by the Director General of the agency, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, there are no concerns of that nature in the country at the moment.

Dr. Chinwe has assured Nigerians that the news currently circulating on the social media space is completely false.

The rumour mostly being circulated on WhatsApp and Facebook was attributed to a warning issued by the Director General of the World Health Organization.

But the NCDC boss says it is all fake news and a deliberate attempt to cause panic among Nigerians.

“The rumour states that people should avoid eating beef and related products as a result of bovine tuberculosis found in cattle in the North of Nigeria”.

“The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) would like to state that this statement is completely FALSE. The World Health Organization Nigeria Country Office has also put out a release to strongly refute this statement”.

The NCDC has however adviced the public to ensure that meat and other food to be consumed are well cooked and safely handled to avoid the spread of foodborne illnesses.
