The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has urged members of the public to disregard messages purporting a Lassa fever outbreak in the FCT
In a statement signed by its Director General Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, the health agency said the message is not only malicious but untrue and misleading.
‘‘Our attention has been drawn to a message circulating on Whatsapp and Twitter, purporting that there is a suspected Lassa fever case in the Asokoro District Hospital, and advising people to stay away from the Hospital. This is entirely FALSE. The health agencyas it is untrue and baseless.’’
The health agency said the recent national Lassa fever situation report indicates there has been no confirmed Lassa fever case in the FCT since February 2019.
‘‘Contrary to the message being circulated, no death has been recorded from Lassa fever in the FCT this month. Although Lassa fever first appears like malaria, the chances of survival are highest when it is reported early.’’ Says Dr. Chikwe
The agency has warned that all cases of fever be tested for malaria using appropriate diagnostic tools e.g. rapid diagnostic kit (RDT)
‘‘If the result is negative and other common causes of fever are ruled out, healthcare workers are advised to suspect Lassa fever.’’
The NCDC has urged everyone to stay alert for Lassa fever, be conscious of the symptoms and report immediately to a health facility when symptoms are observed, to increase the chances of survival.
They have asked the general public to contact its emergency numbers: +234708 711 0839, 0800 9700 0010- if they have any information on Lassa fever that calls for more investigation.
