Teachers professional standards now part of NCE curriculum…

The Registrar/Chief Executive, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Prof. Josiah Olusegun Ajiboye, says the Council has successfully included ‘The Professional Standards for Nigeria Teachers’ in the curriculum of colleges of education as a course of study at the NCE level across the country.

Speaking at the review of Professional Standards for Nigeria Teachers in Abuja recently, Ajiboye stated that the review of the document as part of the implementation of the National Teacher Policy and the Target 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals was aimed at achieving a sustainable quality education system nationwide.

According to him, the Professional Standards for Nigerian Teachers encapsulate what a professional must know and put into practice as well as the core values, ideals and conduct of that the professional teacher must exhibit. In his words,

“The Professional Standards covered four major themes which include Professional Knowledge, Professional skills, Professional values, attitudes and conduct; and the Professional membership obligation.”

The four themes, he added, had been broken down into thirty-six (36) sub-themes and then into eighty-four (84) standards for review.

Ajiboye informed participants who were made up of erudite scholars from tertiary institutions of learning across the country that the Teachers Standards is one of the key dimensions that are considered crucial to any education policy, and considering the fact that since 2010/2011 the document was developed and presented to the public, emerging issues may have arisen were the basic factors that compelled the review.

“It is in view of this as a national benchmark document that TRCN has selected distinguished experts from the education agencies; critical stakeholders, teacher education institutions and International Development Partners to carry out the review.”

The TRCN Boss said, stressing that, with the review and subsequent reprinting of the PSNT to meet today’s demand and benchmarking global framework, Nigeria will have a Professional Standards for Nigerian Teachers that will meet the nation’s educational needs and serve as a model for other teaching Regulatory bodies in Africa.

Also addressing participants at the Teachers Professional Standards review workshop was the Emeritus Professor Adamu Baikei, the Chairman, TRCN Governing Council, who applauded Professor Josiah Olusegun Ajiboye, the TRCN Boss, for his record breaking initiatives which have gone a long way in enhancing teacher quality and Standards in the nation’s education system. He therefore encouraged him never to ‘relent on his oars as more grounds are to be covered.

The Chairman of TRCN Governing Council said the decision to review the Professional Standards for Nigerian Teachers was a move in the right direction because it was coming after 10 years of the first edition of the document. He therefore thanked participants for accepting the TRCN’s invitation to render a national service to their fatherland.
